Austin Wedding and Portrait photographer, Amelia Tarbet. bio picture

It's all about the real moments...

If you're looking for a wedding photographer, I can honestly say I sympathize. It can be a really long and tiresome process. Where do you start and how do you choose? When I got married, I had no idea what the most important factors were to consider, and I certainly didn't know how to narrow down my favorites. Let me start by saying that photography will be all that's left, besides the memories, when all is said and done. So, what's most important is that your photographer has a style that you can identify with and absolutely love.

My style? It's really a blend of styles. When I first started out in wedding photography seven years ago, I told my clients that my style was total photojournalism and that I would be a "fly on the wall" at their wedding. I quickly learned that this was not a realistic scenario. The trick is to know when it's appropriate to step in and create imagery (ie. creative portraits) and know when to let things just happen. I love candid moments, but I also love stunning, creative, and bold portraiture. However, even when I create portraits for my clients, I want them to feel natural and look comfortable.

I love things that are hip and edgy, but I also love things that are old fashioned. My photography is sort of the same story. Like everything else, photography can easily look too trendy. Certain poses, colors, and even post-production techniques can make images seem really cool now, but how will they look ten or twenty years from now? I know how to move quickly to capture those fleeting moments and expressions that cannot simply be recreated. The welling up of your husbands eyes as he sees you come down the aisle, your mother's expression as she watches you dance with your father, the huge hugs and pure elation (and exhaustion) that everyone shares right after the ceremony is over. I've experienced and seen these moments enough to know when they usually happen and how to capture them.

So, what do you want to remember from your wedding day? By the color of your shoes or the flowers you picked? Of course you do! These details are the result of months of planning and reflect your individual style. But, I am sure years from now those aren't the images you will want to pour over. I'll bet you'll want to see the images that reflect the real moments and real emotions that happened between you, your families and best friends. That's what I believe and that's how I approach photography. Finding beauty in all the real moments and capturing the essense of your wedding in an authentic, creative and natural way.

Anne and Gabe

Anne and Gabe live in Montana, but decided to come back to their native land of Texas to get married. Their ceremony was held on Anne’s family ranch near Concan (about 4 hours from Austin). The moment I saw the huge tree and ranch house where they would have their ceremony, I knew this would be a uniquely beautiful day. The house was built in the 30’s, and it alone was a dream for me to photograph, especially with all it’s historic charm. We all know vintage is quite the trend in weddings (and fashion in general), but like I mentioned in my first post about Anne and Gabe, this was all “As Real as It Gets.” All the vintage you see here is 100% real. It’s something I admire so much in my clients, their ability to incorporate unique elements into their wedding, as well as maintaining a sense of being totally authentic.

Vendors:
Dress- Elizabeth Fillmore (Saks Fifth Avenue)
Flowers- Village Greenery and Flowers (Houston)
Cakes- House Pasture Cattle Company and Three Brothers Bakery (Houston)
Band- Blues Specialists (Continental Club’s house band)
Thanks so much to talented Tony Ku for assisting me on this wedding with me.

How gorgeous were Anne’s shoes?!

I say this whole-heartedly…these were some of the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever seen at a wedding.

I loved how unique and yet natural Anne’s hair looked. Stunning.

This one’s an inside joke…

One of my favorites.

Tony snapped this one of us as we walked down to the river.

I was so concerned about watching where I stepped (as to not drop all my gear) and then I looked up for a quick moment…

Gabe is a forester in Montana. Hence, the awesome groom’s cake.

Anne and Gabe had a rockin’ old-school blues band.

- 1:23 pm Libby - WOW! What a beautiful and colorful wedding! The brides dress may just be my dream wedding gown. Such an adorable scoop back! Any thoughts on selling?? :)

- 4:04 pm Katherine - wow- they are all beautiful- lovely captured event!

- 3:38 pm Anne and Gabe - The photos really look great, Amelia! Thank you so much. We're really excited to get our hands on some of them. Anne says "no, the dress is not for sale; it's my precious."

- 9:05 am Anne Gerken - Amelia, your work is absolutely stunning - from the start. The phone conversations before we even met told me I had made a good decision as I was confident about what you planned to accomplish. You listened to what style I was interested in and were completely honest, upfront, and easy to work with. I was amazed at how you came out to my family's ranch (a bit off the beaten path) with your "assistant" (also incredibly talented photographer who did a wonderful job) and approached the event with an eye for the natural surroundings. The charm of the house and property were captured with elegance - looking at the photos makes me think it was set up if I didn't know otherwise! It is all so meaningful, beyond just the wedding - seeing my family and friends in such a gorgeous light. The journalistic approach captured so many of the personalities involved in our special day. The use of the light in the portraits, how you worked AROUND the overbearing sun on a cloudless blue day (thank goodness). Also you both were unbelievably professional and helpful with coordinating pictures involving the masses making announcements at the reception (I was doubtful at first but it all worked out with the sparklers). There were moments where you were taking initiative with the flair of a wedding coordinator when I was drowning in a sea of bridal social calls! I loved it, like I said, I felt like you were really easy to get along with which helped me to relax and be myself in photos - I didn't feel like I was asking too much even if I probably was. Every shot looked like it belonged on glossy pages, precisely what I was hoping for...and like other brides (hopefully) there were things I was pretty absolute about. Thank you both for the fine work you produced and the excellent professional yet relaxed approach you took at the event and before hand. I would recommend you to anyone for making our day special on several different levels, we will cherish the immortality you gave to the house and property long after they are both (hopefully not soon) gone.

- 7:22 pm Barbara Hearne - OMG Amelia, this is a fantastic wedding. True Texas and vintage at it's very best. I loved all the details. Great job!
